  The Reading Club applied for national Pioneer awards for two big projects from 2009 and were notified that both projects made the finalist list.  One project included using a $5,000 grant for Glenside Elementary School to provide books for the Wood to Wonderful literacy project for pre-K, Kindergarten, and first grade.  Dictionaries were given to every third, fourth and fifth grader at the school.  The majority of the grant was used to buy Smart Board projectors, which the whole school can use.  School uniforms were also bought to keep on hand for children who needed them. 

  The second project also used a $5,000 grant to help with Berks Women in Crisis wish list.  At the top of the list of needs was a playground set for the children at the shelter.  The Club also bought washable, stackable chairs for the dining room, made backpacks filled with school supplies for the kids, and welcome kits for the women which included bath towels, wash cloths, soap, shampoo, etc.

  The Reading Pioneer Club projects not only made the finals, but the Women in Crisis project won the Project of Excellence award!  The awards were given at the Annual National Pioneer meeting held in Atlanta in February.  On hand to receive the award for the Club was Leni Herr, Reading Club Member at Large and Chapter 2nd Vice President.

Activities:
The ladies craft group works hard at making Hug-A-Bears, "Read to Me" kits and putting together backpacks for students and making Welcome Kits for Berks Women in Crisis.  They help with food pantries, shelters, the American Red Cross, Cancer Society and read to school children.  Contribute funds to purchase books for school libraries, support the Salvation Army Easter Basket Project, Women in Crisis and food pantries.
